December 17, 2008 - February 8, 2009

The exhibition FOTGRAFIS collection reloaded is a reprise of a photography show organized by Bank Austria Kunstforum in Vienna from September 11 to October 29, 2008. The Bank Austria FOTOGRAFIS collection is one of the earliest major photographic collections in Europe. It was established in 1976 and last shown to the public in 1986. This year, Kunstforum displayed 250 top works of international photography (selected from more than 400 collection pieces). The exhibition seeks to return the existence and structure of this outstanding collection - long known only to experts - to the public consciousness.
Well-known photographers from the early days of photography in the 1840s up to the 1980s are represented in the collection FOTOGRAFIS.

The earliest displayed works are by one of the "fathers of photography", William Henry Fox Talbot, and the Scottish photography pioneers David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson. Fox Talbot wrote in 1841 that he knew of only few things in science that would e as astonishing as a gradually appearing image on photographic paper. It was a fitting description of feelings about the new medium at a time of its birth. Travel shots by Francis Frith and Maxime Du Camp and the photochronography by Eadweard Muybridge are given a prominent place in the FOTOGRAFIS collection. Julia Margaret Cameron, Edward Steichen and Heinrich Kuhn represent Pictorialism - a photographic trend most popular in the 19th century, which followed painting and graphics in both technique and theme. On the other hand, "Straight Photography" of the 1920s and 1930s represented by the work of Paul Strand and Edward Weston, or representatives of New Objectivity in Europe, such as Albert Renger-Patzsch, apply an opposing approach based on the specific qualities of the photographic medium - a faithful, optically sharp snapshot of reality. At the same time, the possibilities of photography are dramatically expanded through experimentation carried out by avante-garde artists, especially the Dadaists and Constructivists such as ManRay, Alexander Rodchenko, Andre Kertesz and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy who are among the most distinctive artists on display. Reportage photography and Social Documentary play an irreplaceable role in the history of 20th-century photography, from Henri Cartier-Bresson to Diane Arbus. Examples of older works by contemporary Austrian artists, such as Arnulf Rainer or VALIE EXPERT, close the collection's representative assemblage.
